Tim Barretto, Scratchy Fish

Perth Centre for Photography is pleased to present Scratchy Fish by Tim Barretto.

‘Scratchy Fish’ was captured on 16mm negative film at a local aquarium. After developing the film, the negative underwent a process of scratching and tampering against surfaces of varying textures. Scanned by hand using a simple flatbed, each frame was individually re-captured and assembled in sequences frame by frame. A labour-intensive process that reveals the stills within motion. Originally intended for a music video, this footage slept in the archive for almost a decade until recently rediscovered.

Tim Barretto is an Australian filmmaker and photographer who has produced works in Australia, Indonesia and India. Tim’s debut feature documentary ‘Aceh beyond the tsunami’ won Best Documentary at the 2018 Dhaka International Film Festival and participated in HotDocs DocShop & Visions du Reel Media Library. Tim’s work has also shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Darwin International Film Festival, Cinefest Oz, International Film Festival Rotterdam and Oaxaca Film Fest among others. Tim is the founder of Hope St Productions and has recently established Lab West Film, a modern film processing lab in Perth, Western Australia.
