Perth Centre For Photography is pleased to present Now Is Enough by Liam Gnaden, opening on the 11th December at 6 pm, RSVP by email is essential.

Taken over several years in countries such as America, Hong Kong & Vietnam, and locally in Perth, ‘Now is Enough’ is an experiential exhibition exploring the way in which we absorb photographic media in today’s digital society. The collection showcases a series of images focused on subjects appearing somewhat dystopian or disconnected within their urban context through gestural or even humorous manners, which is exhibited through varying physical display techniques and experiences.

The exhibition is split into two spaces, an entry threshold which is first entered through and the enclosed ‘Black Box’ space further through the exhibition. Each space utilizes different physical techniques to display a set of images. Where the entry space utilises traditional black and white frames, the ’Black Box’ provides specially designed light-emitting frames, designed to emulate digital media displays such as a phone, tablet or screen.

In this environment, the work seeks to immerse the user’s attention, where the glowing of the light boxes in the darkness acts as a beacon and beckon the user for closer engagement. The construction of the frame, however, distorts and warps the image, adding a slight coloured glow emulating a digital display, dispute all being a physically printed photograph in a physical display using light distortion.

By comparing his technique to the traditionally displayed photographs, the work aims to question the users’ experience of their everyday absorption of photography and digital media and whether this leaves them feeling dystopian and or intentionally removed from their environment, rather than connected to tangible experiences.

Perth based designer and self-taught photographer, Liam Gnaden focuses on the subject of human experience and the natural environment. Working professionally as an Interior Architect, Liam approaches all facets of design & photography with a holistic approach. Currently, Liam’s focus on photography with an observational approach, exploring the obscure within the every day, through predominantly medium format photography. “I’m drawn to the excitement of not knowing what’s going to be photographed, and the interactions that it provides. In many ways, the process of engaging with the subject matter can often be more rewarding than the result.”
