Maria Fredericks, is a Warnambol Gambera woman and a Traditional Owner for Kingana Country, from Kalumburu Community. Out on Country, I can feel the old people.
It’s just a feeling.
No one else can feel, like I feel.
Through her artworks, Maria explores nostalgic experiences when returning to Country. Using movement, intimate portraits, vast landscapes and the preservation of significant cultural artefacts, Maria’s works are an enchanting visual narrative that evoke a sense of reverence and respect. Photographing Elders and young people on Country, Maria’s series is an intersection of past and present. Her practice fosters a deep appreciation for Country and culture that form the foundation of her identity.
Out on Country, by Maria Fredericks was created during Exposure: New Voices in Australian Photography. Exposure, is a photo media initiative by the Perth Centre of Photography (PCP), supporting the need for and value of empowering First Nations artists with opportunities to voice their stories and lived experience via artistic practice.
PCP partnered with Kimberley-focused organistaion, Camera Story, to deliver the tailored mentoring program in the artists home communities to provided skills development, resources, professional opportunities, and network development over an 18-month period. .
Between 2021-2023, Exposure saw artists and mentors working acrossDjugan, Yawuru, Ngarinyin, Mangala, Karajarri, Wunambol, Kwini and Whadjuk Noongar Country in the Kimberley, Pilbara and South-West regions on Western Australia.
