Layli Rakhsha, I was being watched

Perth Centre for Photography is pleased to present I was being watched by Layli Rakhsha.

I was being watched is a series of photographs that explores the idea of boundaries between public and private spaces. During a short visit to Melbourne in 2011, Rakhsha documented the large screen in Federation Square after seeing herself on the screen, initially unaware that she was being monitored and watched. Going through her archive ten years later, Rakhsha is presenting the documented images in a video format to reflect on the missed boundaries in public places. I was being watched presents a dark, mute and ongoing dialogue between public and private space.

I was being watched is presented on Nightworks and runs Wednesday to Friday evenings, from Friday, 6 August 2021. Please RSVP to the opening here.

Layli Rakhsha is a Perth based artist born in Iran. Through her focus on photography and screen-printing techniques, she seeks to express, release and unfold her thoughts about repetition and daily routine. Most of Rakhsha’s major projects revolve around the idea of home. She explores ‘home’ by definition of personal experiences, feelings and emotions, social and cultural attachments to a particular place.

Rakhsha completed her PhD at Curtin University in 2019. She has presented several papers at national and international conferences and exhibited and participated in residencies in Australia, Iran, Spain and Canada. Rakhsha is currently a sessional academic teacher at Curtin College and a community education consultant at Artsource.
