CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF
Daniel Gevaux
26 September – 7 November
The Perth Centre for Photography is pleased to present Conversations With Myself by Daniel Gevaux, opening 6 pm, Friday 25 September.
The 300 images that form the body of this exhibition heavily feature the CBD of Perth. This subject is one that has pre-occupied Gevaux since 2014, but in this case he has opted to predominantly forgo the human figure in favour of the artefacts of their interaction with the environment; the evidence and proof of their passage and existence. In many ways, these photographic documents offer a second order of witness to the lives of the people of the city. Like a forensic photographer, Gevaux provides us with the evidence of a situation we must imaginatively reconstruct.
This exhibition builds on from Gevaux’s first solo exhibition in 2018, also at the Perth Centre for Photography, as well as a residency he held at the PCP gallery studio in 2019. This current show is an attempt to move beyond traditional models of display and begin a process of negotiation, discussion and interaction; between the artist, the audience, and the artwork.
The premise is for the artworks to be interacted with by the audience, allowing narratives and arrangements to be developed by their choices and desires in response to the photographic works on display. Gevaux invites you to have a close look at the work, and then to take the images and arrange them on the floating wall with the provided magnets. Use your experience of the city, or a fictional narrative, or even just the geometries and colours of the artwork to make an arrangement. Once you’re done, email Gevaux a picture of your finished work, and you are free to take the prints home and continue the experiment there – on your fridge perhaps?
